Manos del Uruguay

Manos del Uruguay was born in 1968 out of a simple question: How can we improve the quality of life of Uruguay’s rural women?
The answer was in handcrafts, using skills inherited from our mothers and grandmothers and the raw material that we had at hand: wool.
That’s how Manos del Uruguay was founded, to give Uruguay’s rural women jobs, that would mean, not just an income, but also an opportunity to personally develop and gain independence, keeping their roots and traditions, close to their community and families.

All of our yarns are hand dyed.
The artisans use big pots heated by wood kettles, creating small batches of wonderful colours.
Our yarns colours are bright and wild, full of nuances and variations. No two skeins are the same, each one is unique, a testimony of a particular moment.

Every skein has a tag with the artisan signature and the name of the village where the cooperative is located.
This helps to remind us, the knitters, that behind each skein there is a woman, a story.

So, what do we have in store at the moment?

Wow!  What can we say?   This is a laceweight yarn which is made of 100% Superwash Merino!

There are 800m in every 100g skein of this beautiful deep space dyed wool, enough to make a fantastic shawl or something else befitting a person who deserves the best!  Perhaps that is you!  It feels amazingly soft when knitted, so much so that even though we knew it to be gorgeous, we were still absolutely blown away by the knitted product.

Silk Blend.  Silk Blend comes in 50g skeins which are a composition of  70% Extrafine Merino Wool and 30% Silk, with a meterage of 135m.  The yarn is a Double Knit and is knitted on a 4mm needle, and we love it!  We always have a selection of colours in store

We have a pattern for a pair of fingerless mittens which uses just 1 skein and showcases the fabulous qualities of this wool.
